Alcohol treatment

“Alcohol treatment” is a term that can be applied to a variety of different methods of addressing when alcohol becomes a problem in someone’s life. Alcohol treatment can be anything from addiction counseling to intensive outpatient therapy to inpatient drug rehab to sober living – with other options in between. One of the most important factors in successful alcohol treatment is finding a type of treatment plan that works for the affected individual and their family. Alcohol treatment is most effective when it is catered to the needs of the person seeking treatment, and presented in a format that is workable for that person. Alcohol treatment should not feel punitive, and it should seem feasible for the person seeking treatment to put their new way of life into effect in order to avoid relapse.

Some people prefer inpatient alcohol treatment, because in the inpatient setting, they can focus completely on the issue at hand in a contained setting where there is no possibility of being exposed to their drug of choice. Moreover, if the person is going to be detoxing, they will need to be in a medically supervised center (either inpatient rehab or hospital) for the beginning of their alcohol treatment. However, if this is not the case, sober living or intensive outpatient alcohol treatment can provide the opportunity to develop skills and a detailed personal plan to address alcohol abuse or alcohol dependency in a real-world situation. This type of alcohol treatment also allows the individual more of a chance to continue on with their daily life (work, school, family) while still dealing with their issue.

Most forms of alcohol treatment incorporate or at least encourage attending 12-step meetings, considering becoming a member of AA, and finding a sponsor. However, AA is not the only path to sobriety in alcohol treatment, and in fact, scientific research since 1970 shows that effective alcohol treatment attends multiple needs of the person and not just his or her alcohol abuse. Alcohol treatment can provide other important resources, such as medication, guidance, legal and job assistance, individual, couples, and family counseling, mindfulness and meditation, and alternative therapies, such as art therapy, Somatic Experiencing, or EMDR.

While deciding what type of alcohol treatment to pursue, consider the resources in your area, as well as what your immediate needs are. Alcohol does not have to be a problem in your life, and alcohol treatment is proven effective when the person seeking treatment is matched with the therapy that works best for their life.
