Ecstasy

Ecstasy (MDMA), a club drug that first came to prominence in the 1970’s and 80’s, has become a growing problem in the United States, particularly with youth. Originally used for medicinal purposes in the psychotherapy field, it became popular in the club scene. Today, ecstasy is classified as an illegal drug but continues to be abused.

History

MDMA was originally used in therapy sessions in the 1970’s. Psychologists found that the drug could increase communication and reduce psychological defenses in patients. Around the same time, it began being passed around in pill form through dance clubs throughout the country. Users found that it gave them feelings of euphoria, energy to dance for long periods of time, and feelings of “connectedness” with the people around them. MDMA was classifed as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States in 1985. Once the drug was made illegal, almost all therapeutic use stopped, but the drug only gained popularity on the club circuit. Ecstasy became an integral part of the rave scene in the 80’s.

Effects

- A sense of self acceptance and increase in self confidence
- Lowered aggression/hostility
- Lowered anxiety
- Intense mood lift accompanied by feelings of euphoria, empathy, compassion, intimacy, and love
- Intensified perceptions, including touch, hearing, and vision
- Psychedelic hallucinations
- Increased stimulation and arousal
- Increased energy
- Decreased pain sensitivity

Side Effects
- Dehydration
- Difficulty concentrating
- Jaw clenching and teeth grinding
- Dry mouth

After Effects

Psychological
- Increased anxiety
- Panic Attacks
- Depression
- Increased aggression and irritability
- Restlessness
- Decreased attention, concentration, focus, and motivation
Physical
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Vertigo
- Insomnia
- Jaw soreness

While most of these effects are temporary, depression and anxiety can become chronic. Excessive ecstasy use can also lead to long and short term memory loss, liver damage, and teeth damage. People under the influence of ecstasy can also experience sudden death from high body temperatures and brain swelling.

Today

Unfortunately, ecstasy use is still a problem in America. Currently 1 in 12 eighth graders say they have tried ecstasy at least once. While stricter laws and enforcement have been marginally successful, ecstasy is by no means a drug of the past.
