Why Drug Rehab Doesn't Work

With Brittney Spears and Lindsay Lohan leaving 30 day drug rehab programs and then being seen partying and exhibiting questionable behavior immediately after treatment it is no wonder why Americans have lost faith in drug rehab treatment.

Much like how people are looking for the quick fix diet pill and miracle weight loss solution, we are drawn to the promise of instantly fixing that which ails us. Any responsible drug rehab program will tell you that for most clients to attend their program without following up with sober living their chances of long term sobriety are almost non-existent. While some may go through a 30 day drug rehab program and come out and stay sober that is he exception and not the rule. High end luxury drug rehab programs do what they are supposed to do. They help a client detox, get diagnosed correctly, provide a safe and supportive environment, and introduce a client to therapy and 12 step programs. The reason why drug rehab doesn't work alone is that the expectation of teaching clients in 30 days the daily living skills they will need to stay sober is totally unrealistic. The highest success rate with sobriety is seen by those that attend a 30 day drug rehab program and then do at least 2-3 months of sober living.

Clients that commit to sober living for their whole first year sober are the ones with the best chance of succeeding. It is time for people to become educated about the real process of recovery and understand the time commitment it really takes to get sober. Those that tell you they can fix you in 30 days are lying to you. With long term drug and alcohol abuse the brain needs time to heal and during that time clients learn life skills and how to better control their impulses. The public is educated enough about a disease like Cancer where they would not expect to see a Dr. and get diagnosed and then go back for a few visits over the next month and be cured. The reality is just like having the disease of cancer which can involve months of chemotherapy, the disease of addiction needs many months to begin winning the battle against the addiction.
